In 2006, we launched the world’s first ever Fairtrade vanilla ice cream. We’re now promising that by 2011, every ingredient in every ice cream we make that can be Fairtrade certified, will be.
We’ve always believed that nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else. Fairtrade goes to the very heart of our sense of what is right and wrong and by April 2010, more than 60% of our ice cream will be Fairtrade certified.
Fairtrade is about making sure everybody gets a fair share of the pie. We believe in paying more for our ingredients so that the farmers we work with have the security of being able to re-invest in their livelihood and provide healthcare, education and safe housing for their families and communities.
Our decision to use 100% Fairtrade ingredients in our ice cream will involve six different Fairtrade Co-ops around the world, who have more than
22,000 members producing sugar cane, cocoa, bananas, vanilla, almond
and walnuts for us.
Our farmers produce the ingredients that go into 42 different chunks,
swirls and ice cream flavours. When we’re done, we’ll have 20 different flavours that are 100% Fairtrade certified. It’s the biggest conversion into Fairtrade products the world has ever seen.
We need more Fairtrade-certified almonds than the current world supply. We’ve purchased all the available Fairtrade almonds from the Mountain Fruits Fairtrade co-operative in Pakistan, but it still only represents one third of our needs – so we’re working with them to increase their harvest, and their membership.
Of the 20 flavours available in Europe, four are already certified Fairtrade (Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Macadamia, Vanilla and Vanilla Toffee Crunch). Six other flavours will be certified Fairtrade in 2010 and the remaining
ten by the end of 2011.
Four of our top five best selling flavours (Baked Alaska, Caramel Chew
Chew, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Phish Food) are among those that
will be certified Fairtrade in 2010.
